Procedure of the operation<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Ear correction is usually performed under local anesthesia (but also under general anesthesia if desired) and you or your child can leave the doctor’s office after the procedure.<\/p>\n\n

There are numerous different techniques for pinning back ears. The basic principle lies either in the removal of excess cartilage or in reshaping the flattened edge of the ear. <\/p>\n\n

First, an incision is made in the skin crease behind the ear, and the skin and cartilage are carefully separated. Once the cartilage is exposed, it can be reshaped using special instruments. <\/p>\n\n

The cartilage is sometimes partially removed, ground down, or scored. The new shape is then stabilized with sutures, and the wound edges are stitched together. <\/p>\n\n

Then a special bandage (headband, ideally with Velcro fastener) must be worn day and night for 2 weeks, followed by another 2 weeks at night.<\/p>\n\n

Since the sutures are self-dissolving, they do not need to be removed. The scars behind the ears fade after some time, and the final result is visible after approximately two to three months. <\/p>\n\n
