The city was initially called New Rome but was later renamed Constantinople. <\/p>\n\n<p>After the division of the Roman Empire, Constantinople became part of the Byzantine Empire and remained the political and cultural center of the region. Later, the Crusaders conquered Constantinople and brought Christianity to the city. Constantinople went into decline until the Ottomans conquered it, made it the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and renamed it Istanbul.
