Dental implants

Oral implantation refers to the insertion of artificial tooth roots into the jawbone. After healing, these then serve to anchor artificial dental prostheses (crowns, bridges, or dentures).

Bruising can also occasionally happen. Pain is generally rare and mild. In some cases, despite prior careful analysis, it may become apparent during the procedure that an implant cannot be placed. In such cases, the procedure must be discontinued.

• Healing phase

For implantations where immediate loading is not permitted, the healing phase lasts three to six months. During this period, the implants should be protected during chewing in order not to compromise the healing process.

• Complications

There is no treatment without risk: the risk of infection always exists, although serious problems occur rather rarely as a result. In the upper jaw, opening of the maxillary sinus or the nasal floor may occur. However, this does not necessarily lead to failure in every case.

In the lower jaw, a nerve that transmits sensation not movement to the lower lip may be injured. In such cases, a decision must be made as to whether the implant should be left in place or removed. Fortunately, such disturbances are usually temporary. In rare cases, however, numbness of the lower lip may persist.

It may also happen that an implant does not integrate and must be removed immediately or possibly during uncovering after a few months due to loosening. It must be clarified on a case-by-case basis whether a new implantation is an option.

• Aftercare

If care is insufficient due to inadequate oral hygiene, infections must be expected. This can significantly reduce the lifespan of an implant. The care instructions must therefore be followed precisely by the patient. Regular, periodic check-ups by the dentist and/or dental hygienist are very important in order to detect and treat any potential damage at an early stage.
